People Say: All Religions Are the Same
People Say 2012
Sunday 5th February 12
Download
Ephesians 2:8,9 Romans 5:8,9
Speaker: D. Smith
People Say…
All religions are basically the same. They all serve the same function, to meet God and be better people. It doesn’t matter what brand or tradition or culture you were born in, they're just different ways of expressing the same truth.
Have you ever walked up a mountain and got to the top just to find a road and a carpark up there? There’s more than one way to get to the top. The climb gets you fit, so that’s better. But the people in the car say the drive is easy and pleasant, so that’s better. The rock climbers say there’s no excitement in a drive or a walk, our way is better.
So the discussion about religions becomes about which is the best way to achieve the same goal?

- Make demands on ourselves
- Get indignant when people can’t live up to our standards
- Develop the ability to make the demands sound good and holy.
- Yet they’re just a burden
Have you grown up like that
- With these unfair burdens being placed on you
- And all it’s done, like Paul says, is show how sinful you are
- And make you think that God is disappointed in you.

Acts 2011
Sunday 3rd April 11

Acts 6:1-7
Speaker: D. Smith
How do I fit in?
- When you think about the question more than the answer
- What does it mean?
- Perhaps it means, “Have I found friends here?”
- Have people made an effort with me?
- Have my needs been met?
Or…
- Maybe it means is there a role for me?
- Am I needed?
- Have I been invited to help out?
Or…
- Is what I am doing recognized
- Or talked about as if it’s important
How do you fit in?

- Wait and see…
Can you see how he managed to get the Sanhedrin to be fence sitters?
- Do nothing, that’s your best bet
- Don’t make a decision about this Christ
- Wait and see
Is that where you are? Is that how you’re thinking about God?
- I don’t need to decide
- There’s plenty of time
- I’ll just wait and see what happens with all this
- The proof is in the pudding
- I’ll stay on the fence and be an impartial observer

- When you decide not to go out all night drinking and clubbing, turn up to church with a headache, while your friends sleep in
- When you decide not to sleep over at your boyfriend or girlfriend’s place, even though your friends think you’re crazy
- When you make a stand at work about how someone is being treated
Those things take courage…
- And they prompt questions
- And the answer is the Jesus

Psalm 27:14
Speaker: D. Smith
We’re in Advent season…
- The time when we wait for the arrival of the Messiah
- The prophets predicted and the Jews waited for 483 years
- That a savior would come
But we busy ourselves in Advent, don’t we
- We call it the silly season
- Get busy buying things, planning things, creating the perfect Christmas
But in the midst of that, can we slow down? Can we wait?
What does God want to show us – in the wait
What does God want to teach us – in the wait
What does he want to say to us,
- build in us
- create in us
- that would never be there if we just rushed forward and tried to grab what we think is rightfully ours
Sometimes God says wait…

Zedekiah turns AND burns!
Zedekiah came to God because he had a self-identified need.
- his perception was that God could meet that need
- pulled him out of his tool belt
- began to use him as a tool
- it blew up in his face.
- God wasn’t going to be treated like that
The assumption is that what I want is the most important thing:
- I want to be happy
- I want to be free
- I want to be healed
- I want a better job
- I want out of this marriage
- I want a better feeling of success in life
That is not a gospel understanding
It comes from a world that has self satisfaction at its core.

Suffering for Christ

Sunday 7th March 10

1 Pe 4:12-19
Speaker: D.Smith
And the reason we don’t like it is because deep down we subscribe to the western philosophy of suffering
- Summed up in the bumper sticker
- ‘poop’ happens
Think about this:
Western understanding is suffering = poop
- Not just senseless, but repugnant and disgusting. A toxic element of life to be avoided at all costs
When does it happen?
- Just happens
- Random and senseless, like a drive by shooting, taking out victims unexpectedly, without reason or provocation
So we end up with a western view that says that all suffering is toxic and there never is a reason for it.
- Now bring that into Christian circles and what have you got?
- A Jesus who fixes that
Like a cosmic ointment that cures all ills

While this was going on the tension in the town was high

- First by a café waitress - Hey you were with him
I was not, I don’t know what you’re talking about.
- Then by another older woman, Yes you were
I swear on my mother’s grave I do not know him.
- Then a crowd gathered and agreed, you’ve got the accent – you speak like him
Then he started to swear and curse like only a fisherman could, denying any association with him whatsoever, I swear to God…
And right then,
- While Jesus was being taken to be beaten, whipped, spat on, laughed at
- And nailed onto a cross for the sins of the world
A rooster crowed
- A sound that cut Peter like a knife
- Only then did he remember what Jesus said
- “What have I done?”
Bible says that he went outside and wept bitterly.

But the Bible is saying that your eternal life actually begins now…

This is not a call to make your life busier
- None of us need that
- It’s unhealthy, it’s unwise
- It’s a sickness of our society
It’s not even a call to look at your works
- And align them to your eternal destiny
- To make them kingdom works
- To make them good works
That’s good too, but it’s not what the Bible is saying here
- The Bible is calling us to faith
- Faith that transforms
- Faith that invites Jesus to the centre of our lives
- Faith that causes us to grow
- Faith that causes us to make life decisions around kingdom values
- Faith that causes us to take the next exit of the western freeway and follow that small 4wd track to God knows where.

Romans 12:1,2
Speaker: D. Smith
We have keep reminding ourselves that our Christian faith is not about ourselves
- It’s not about me
- Not a life aid for me
- Not a helpful resource for my family
- I am not even the point of my own salvation – but God is, as is a world that’s suffering

Genesis
Speaker: D. Smith
Humans are in deep need of blessing
- We’re insecure, fearful
- Down on ourselves, convinced that we’re no good
- Doubt our worthiness
We need to be blessed, affirmed in our belovedness
- Friends must bless friends
- Parents must bless children
- Pastors, carers and leaders must bless those in their care
And – we need to know we are blessed by God

Matt 3:17; 1 Pe 2:4-10
Speaker: D. Smith
The Father said to the Son
- I love you, you are loved
- I’m pleased with you
- You’re a good Son
Do you remember your own father talking like that to you?
- I love you, I’m pleased with you
- I believe in you, I’m so proud of you
- Whatever you put your hand to, I’ll be there with you and for you
- I know you can do it
- I’ll always be pleased with you
Or a father to a daughter?
- I love you, I’m pleased with you
- You are beautiful, my heart fills my chest when I think about your beauty
- You look fantastic and always do whether you’re made up or not, but the real beauty is what I see inside
- Your heart for people, your love of life, your love for God
- I’ll always be pleased with you

And Now I'm Praying for the End of Time!
Speaker: D. Smith
You say: That’s not us
- we’re not praying for the end of time
- we really do love each other
I say: Is that so?
- you love each other?
- How much?
- Do you love him unconditionally?
- Will you still love her if she doesn’t want sex?
- Do you love each other enough to spend the rest of your life together?
- If that’s true, then you’ll be married.
- That’s what marriage is

The Peace of God, which Transcends all Understanding
Speaker: D. Smith
Part of the reality of being human is this…
In each of us there’s an anxiety
- An unsettledness
- Or an insecurity
Am I doing the right thing?
- Am I in the right place?
- Is my life of any worth?
- What about me? My life?
- Is this what I’m supposed to be doing?

Pressing On
Speaker: D. Smith
QUESTION: Are you in the same place in regards to Christ as you were this time last year?
- June 2008 – in that last year, in what way have you pressed on? In what way have you taken hold?
Have you pressed on with the church in its mission? – there’s no shortage of things to do
- Wag, Opshop, the school, children and youth
These are not hobbies or pastimes.
- They are things that God has asked our church to press on with.
- And to be a part of this church means to be a part of the mission…
- In whatever form that takes, according to your gifts that the Spirit has given…

Confidence in Christ
Speaker: D. Smith
When Paul says:
I consider it a loss
- Everything that I once thought was to my profit
- Everything that’s now chasing me
- Everything that I invited into my life
- When I thought I was smart or clever or cool
- Everything that came from my failures and weaknesses and terrible accidents
I don’t want to put my confidence there
I want to gain Christ and be found in him.

Timothy and Epaphroditus
Speaker: D. Smith
I normally don’t talk about people and travel plans in the middle of my letters…
- I usually save that for the end
But I couldn’t resist it, because Timothy and Epaphroditus illustrate exactly what I’ve been trying to say to you.

It is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose
Speaker: D. Smith
But I knew that God was real – and I knew that he was in my life – and I knew I liked it and wanted it
- It was time for me to stand up, be counted
- I responded to every altar call
- People must have thought I had every problem under the sun – I was down there every week
- I didn’t care, because I knew that I needed everything of God I could get

Courage
Speaker: D. Smith
We have to stop thinking of our faith as something out there
- Relating to someone out there
- That secures my future somewhere
We need to bring the reality of Christ home, here
- To where it affects our lives
- To where the challenges and changes are uncomfortable
- To where our character is chiselled into that of Christ’s
- So that he is exalted in our bodies
That takes courage

Yes, and I will continue to rejoice
Speaker: D. Smith
There’s not much that’s more effective that the devil could do
- Than to get us to believe our own lies
- For us to come across hard times, grief, anguish, rejection, isolation – and then say – that’s it for me
- That’s as good as I’ll get
- That’s as much as I’ll ever do

Abounding in knowledge and depth of insight
Speaker: D. Smith
Knowledge of the truth is so important for people of faith
- It saves us from all these half-baked, self-serving pop theologies
- That equate God’s favour with my abilities
- And that if I behave myself then God will reward me with wealth
- And assumes that if it’s in a worship song, it’s true
